Mount Alava Elementary School contributes to community health improvements & protection of the ecosystem
The school community was actively involved in the development of a green infrastructure treatment project for the school septic system. This rain garden removes pollutants from the system. Outflow is briefly retained, the vegetative and soil processes take place, and clean water flows out.
Successful water treatment systems protect coral reefs and public health
The American Samoa Advisory Group (CRAG) and community members worked with Ridge to Reefs on developing and implementing green infrastructure treatment systems for runoff from piggeries.
Together, we developed a new practice for dry litter piggeries, replacing unsustainable and inaccessible wood chips with abundant coconut husks, leaves, and local biochar.
