Soil Stabilization
High mountain slopes in areas of high rainfall are particularly prone to soil erosion. Above the town of Yauco, along the road PR-355, there are a number of slopes exposed from road reconstruction. These slopes vary in steepness and direction. This was both a high priority site to prevent further erosion and an excellent test location for improvements to the methods (see technical implementation).
New vegetation growth benefits the immediate area by holding high-quality soils in place. This encourages further plant growth, provides habitat, and provides other ecosystem services. Coral reefs require clean and clear water to grow; sunlight must be able to reach the coral. High concentrations of sediment flowing into the water can block the light. Stabilization of the slopes above Yauco holds soils in place and protects the reefs below.
