Local Organizations Work to Prevent Soil Erosion

Ridge to Reefs partnered with Protectores de Cuencas, based in Puerto Rico, to purchase a hydroseeder. Working in partnership with other local and national NGOs including the Natural Resources Conservation Service, North Carolina State University, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Fish and Wildlife Service, we developed and tested new methods for seeding high mountain slopes. Testing innovative mulch and seed mixes, we optimized methods for stabilizing soils.

New plant growth in the high mountains protects coral reefs

Holding these soils in place keeps them from flowing downstream. Innovative natural methods targeting different types of slopes increase the efficacy of seeding efforts. A healthy coral reef provides major benefits to coastal communities, in the form of fishing, tourism, and buffering from storms and flooding.
