Collect Water Samples

Community members participated in the survey blitz training and collected water samples from a variety of locations. This allows spatially identifying probable sources of pollution.

Test for Pollutants

Samples were tested for ammonia, likely from untreated sewage, optical brighteners found in detergents, and Chlorophyll A, a sign of nutrient enrichment.

Design Remediation

The vetiver grass planting was designed to interrupt and slow runoff flow. The design accounts for pollution sources, natural substrate, and the physical structure of the remediation area.

Install Remediation

Vetiver rows were planted spaced 2 feet apart. Vetiver grows rapidly and has deep roots. The plants are placed for optimal growth and ability to slow the flow of water. Vetiver naturally removes excess nutrients and allows pollutants to settle out of the water before reaching the reef.
