Harrisonburg Department of Public Works

The Harrisonburg Department of Public Works donated construction equipment and labor to intercept a pipe from Seiberts Creek, redirecting the flow into the new bioreactor. Water is retained and naturally treated for eight hours in the bioreactor before flowing out to the pond. We estimate that the project will remove 1365 lbs of nitrogen per year from Blacks Run, which drains to the North River.

In Keezletown, Virginia, east of Harrisonburg, work is underway to construct a spring bioreactor at the Smith Creek Headwaters Spring. This project will naturally remove excess nitrogen and prevent elevated nitrogen levels downstream, protecting the health and function of the ecosystem.
