Building the Bioreactor
Concept Layout
Identify an area of high nitrogen input to the watershed. The bioreactor relies on natural flow patterns and must be positioned accordingly.
Excavate the Trench
Dig a trench of the appropriate dimensions to handle the flow volume expected in each location. Flow volume is related to the normal source flow volume from agricultural run-off or tributary streams sources.
Layer Wood Chips, Filter Fabric, and Dirt
The materials layered in the bioreactor promote the growth of beneficial microbes and provide physical filtration and water retention. Structuring these materials supports maximum efficiency of the natural nitrogen removal process.
